The Purpose Of The Petals

“and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds” Hebrews 10:24

Last week we celebrated the beloved Valentine’s day. It’s one of those holidays you either love or hate.   Either way in the time leading up to V-Day you were guaranteed to see tons of floral arrangements, either in the grocery store or on a street corner. (BTW does anyone else think it’s random to set up a flower shop on the side of the road??…lol.)

Personally, I love flowers!  It’s something about the smell, the colors, or receiving them by surprise that just brightens my day. Perhaps you were the recipient of one of those gorgeous bouquets, gave some to a person you love, or saw arrangements floating around in your office. However, as beautiful as they are they don’t last forever.  And one of the tale tale signs that they are coming to the end of their course is when the petals begin to fall.

The average person might not think about this, but as I looked at a rose on my desk someone gave me, my inner geek got the best of me and I thought to myself- what exactly is the purpose of the petals?

After a little research via my friend Google, there was one function of the petal that really stood out to me.

Petals help the plant so that it may propagate.

Propagate??  Don’t worry. I’ll tell you what it is.  🙂

Propagate essentially means to multiply; to reproduce; to spread something around.

I smiled to myself because I could see how God was speaking to me through something as simple as a flower petal.

Just like these petals, we too have the ability to help reproduce/multiply things in the lives of the people that we are around.

Just think about it- most of us know someone who either:

  • Promotes love or promotes strife
  • Encourages others to look for ways to serve or entices others to stir up conflict
  • Help others embrace their unique gifts and talents or are envious because it is not them
  • Use their words to inspire and uplift or spread dissension and tear people down

Our lives have impact my loves. And they can produce either a positive or negative effect.

I don’t know about you, but as the author of Hebrews implored- I want to be a person who ignites a heart of love and good works in those I am around.  To be a girl who leaves a trail of petals that produce:

  • More hope in the midst of deep pain
  • Joy in times sorrow
  • Faith instead of fear
  • And the love of Christ that would cause others to want to know Him more

So the next time you see a flower petal ask yourself- what is your is life reproducing?

Until next time!

xoxo

  1. I loved this because it reminds me that God is everything. It also reminds me that in hard times or in negative situations you can find God is the midst. I did receive flowers for Valentine’s Day but I just kept them on the table and didn’t look at them again. This will definitely help me to go deeper and appreciate the little things more . 🙂
